In Odesa, a heated debate is ongoing regarding the placement of the monument dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka. City council members are currently considering the installation site in the Cosmonauts' Park, which will be named in honor of the esteemed poetess.
It is worth noting that the decision to erect the monument was approved by the culture, tourism, and international relations committee last spring. Proposed locations included Cosmonauts' Park, Heroes' Avenue (formerly known as Oleksandrivskyi), and Shevchenko Park.
Members of the historical and topographical commission reported to the city council that Shevchenko Park is not a suitable location for the monument. It turns out that a public restroom is located nearby, and a café is currently under construction in that area.
“The location in Shevchenko Park is not ideal. A spot near the Lanzheron arch was suggested. There are both positive and negative aspects. A public restroom was nearby, which has been purchased, and a café is planned for that site. This could create some inconvenience next to the monument,” reported a member of the historical and topographical commission.
Thus, the elected officials are currently planning to place the monument in Cosmonauts' Park near the future church of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which will be built on the site of an existing structure.
