Protecting Chestnuts from Pests

In recent years, there has been an increase in cases of chestnut trees being affected by a dangerous pest - the leaf miner. The caterpillars live inside the leaves, causing significant damage to the plants.

Specialists from the municipal enterprise «City Green Trust» have been annually vaccinating chestnuts with a special vaccine since 2017 to prevent these issues.

To administer the vaccine, a small hole is made in the tree, allowing the treatment to penetrate the leaves and make them inedible for the pest. This leads to the death of the larvae.

A mixture of insecticides and fungicides is an effective method for both preventing and combating the leaf miner pest.

According to the information provided by «City Green Trust», this method of pest control is safe for the environment and the trees.

This year, 995 chestnuts are scheduled to be vaccinated.

The leaf miner is one of the most dangerous pests for chestnut trees, causing serious damage. The caterpillars feed on the sap of the leaves, which can lead to the death of the tree. During the growing season, the moths can produce several generations.
Moreover, the leaf miner can carry viral infections that can infect trees. Research has proven that injections into the trunk are the most effective method for combating this pest.
