Water Supply Alternatives in Odesa
Overview of the water supply situation in Odesa and alternative water sources during the power outage.
In Odessa, the final phase of the reconstruction of the collector system in Arcadia, which began in 2017, is underway.
This phase includes work both above ground and underwater, aimed at improving the performance of drainage networks that have been in poor condition for years.
At the site from the ground to the sea, old drainage pipes are being cleaned, which were in critical condition — part of the structure had rotted, and water was flowing directly into the soil. According to the plan, a new polyethylene pipe, resistant to aggressive environments, will be inserted inside the old 2-meter pipe. The space between them will be filled with concrete, reinforcing the structure and extending its lifespan.
The next step involves laying the pipe in the marine area. The work will be carried out in stages: divers will cut technological hatches, clean the inner surface, and install the new pipe. A floating barge with a crane will be used for this purpose.
“The work in Arcadia is the final active phase of a multi-year project aimed at ensuring quality drainage and comfort for residents and guests of Odessa,” said Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
After the completion of the work, the area will be cleared of construction debris and metal. According to forecasts, the renovated beach will be ready to welcome vacationers in comfortable conditions by next year.
Coastal Reinforcement and Future Promenade
Simultaneously, coastal reinforcement is taking place along the coastline from Arcadia to building 90/51 — between traverses No. 2 and No. 3. These efforts aim to protect the shore from the destructive impact of waves that, due to the nature of the coastline, cause soil erosion during storms.
Currently, the dismantling of old anti-landslide elements, piling, preparation for concreting, and the manufacturing of reinforced concrete products — slabs, blocks of B1, stepped and wave-breaking structures — is underway. These elements serve not only a technical function of reinforcement but also form the basis for the landscaping of the area.
“In the future, there will be a modern promenade with pedestrian zones, ramps, bike paths, and a restored part of the 'Health Trail' that will return in an improved form,” Gennady Trukhanov explained.
