Law enforcement officials apprehended a resident of Podilskyi district for stealing a car. The perpetrator took the vehicle as he did not want to walk home. He has been charged and a preventive measure has been chosen. He faces imprisonment and confiscation of property.

According to the police, the incident occurred in one of the settlements of the Zelenohirska community. A local resident reported that an unknown individual had stolen his VAZ car during the night.

"The police found the vehicle on the outskirts of the settlement, close to the crime scene, and on the same day arrested the suspect at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from Balta, previously convicted for property crimes", - stated the police.

The suspect explained that upon seeing an unguarded car, he decided to drive it home. The vehicle was unlocked, and he started the engine by connecting the ignition wires. However, he couldn't drive far as the car broke down, leading him to abandon it on the outskirts of the village and flee the scene.

"We apprehended the suspect in accordance with procedural norms. We have gathered sufficient evidence and charged him with committing a crime under part 2 of article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for repeated unlawful seizure of a vehicle. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years with confiscation of property. The court has chosen a preventive measure of detention for the suspect. We have also appointed an expert examination to determine the value of the car and the damages incurred by the victim", - said Oleg Sytnyk, head of police department No. 1 of the Podilskyi RUP.
