UN Humanitarian Mission Visits Odesa

A delegation from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has arrived in Odesa, led by humanitarian coordinator Mr. Matthias Schmale.

The visit aims to assess the situation and discuss further cooperation steps.

On October 15, 2024, during a meeting, acting mayor Oleksandr Filatov and the mayor's advisor on social issues, Veronika Etnarovych, discussed with Mr. Schmale the city's safety and humanitarian needs amid military aggression, support for internally displaced persons, and preparations for the winter period.

The parties also discussed plans for future cooperation with charitable organizations and international partners.

Additionally, the UN delegation visited the Center for Social and Psychological Assistance for internally displaced persons and those affected by armed conflict, currently housing around 100 displaced individuals.

The UN representatives familiarized themselves with the living conditions, interacted with the displaced persons and staff at the center.

Mr. Matthias Schmale noted that the center, which has created comfortable living conditions for those forced to leave their homes, is one of the best in Ukraine.

On October 16, the UN delegation visited 6 Sofiivska Street, where emergency repair work on the roof of a residential building is being carried out thanks to the cooperation of charitable organizations and municipal services.

Summarizing the visit, Matthias Schmale expressed solidarity with Ukrainians and emphasized that support from the international community remains a crucial component for ensuring stability and safety of the population amid ongoing conflict.

«I was very pleased to hear about the priorities of the city government – we discussed needs in energy infrastructure, preparations for winter, and assistance for internally displaced persons,» said Mr. Schmale.
