Winter Preparation of Fountains: Key Steps

As October begins, the specialists of the municipal enterprise «Service Center» have started the process of preparing the city fountains for winter conditions, aiming to restore their operation in spring.

The preparation process for the fountains is quite complex. To ensure they survive the winter safely, specialists must blow out the water supply systems, dismantle the nozzles, and also the electrical and pumping equipment. After dismantling, an inspection is conducted, and repairs are made if necessary.

This year, the first fountain to be turned off was located at the Railway Station Square. Next in line for conservation are the fountains: «Waterfall» on Kosivska Street and «Mermaid» in Victory Park.

Other fountains located in the city parks will cease operation by mid-October, while those adorning the central part of Odessa will be conserved last. Overall, by early November, all fountain conservation activities are expected to be completed.

Moreover, in recent years, the «Service Center» has practiced fully sealing the bowls of certain fountains. This method is applied to fountains located in: the City Garden, Shevchenko Park («Small Vase») and the Cosmonauts Square. Since the beginning of the war, four fountains in the UNESCO zone have been completely conserved and did not operate this year: the Memorial Fountain to the Victims of German-Romanian Fascists, the fountain «Petya and Gavrik», the fountain «Children and the Froglet», and the well-fountain «Spring».

The process of deconserving the fountains will begin in early spring. The first fountains are usually turned on in the city center by April 1, with the rest following in April.

Reference
There are 27 city fountains under the management of the «Service Center». In 2024, 17 fountains were deconserved, which are maintained by the «Service Center». All of them are located outdoors, so the main factors determining their operational period are weather conditions and temperature regime.
15 employees of the «Service Center» ensure the proper functioning of these fountains.
Throughout the spring-summer-autumn period, the specialists conduct maintenance of the fountains: cleaning the bowls, collecting debris, cleaning external filters and nozzles, flushing sand filters, and adding water to the required level.
In addition to scheduled maintenance, the fountains occasionally experience acts of vandalism. In such cases, repairs are conducted unscheduled.
The fountain on Crimean Boulevard has always suffered the most vandalism, as many teenagers, despite numerous warnings and prohibitory signs, enter the fountain, unscrew the nozzles, tear off the granite covering from the upper bowl, and damage the upper bowl's piping.
All restoration work on the fountain equipment and the elimination of various damages is entrusted to the specialists of the «Service Center», who continue to perform their duties diligently despite all possible wartime difficulties.
