Water Supply Alternatives in Odesa
Overview of the water supply situation in Odesa and alternative water sources during the power outage.
Since the beginning of October, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise "Service Center" have begun the preparations for winterizing the city fountains.
Fountain conservation is a critical task. To ensure their safe wintering, experts must blow out the water supply systems, dismantle nozzles, as well as electrical and pumping equipment. After dismantling, a thorough inspection of the equipment is necessary, and repairs are made if needed.
Typically, fountains in residential areas are conserved first, followed by those in parks. Fountains located in the city center are handled last.
In recent years, the Service Center has implemented a practice of fully sealing some fountain basins. This method is applied to fountains in the City Garden, Shevchenko Park ("Small Vase"), and the Cosmonauts Square. Additionally, since the onset of the war, four fountains located within the UNESCO zone have been completely winterized.
The process of de-winterizing the fountains will begin in spring. The first fountains are usually turned on in the city center by April 1, with others following in April.
Note
The Service Center manages 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were de-winterized. All are outdoors, so weather conditions significantly affect their operation.
Fifteen employees of the Service Center are responsible for their maintenance.
Throughout spring and summer, they perform regular maintenance: cleaning, filter cleaning, and water level checks.
Fountains also face vandalism, leading to unscheduled repairs.
The fountain on Krymsky Boulevard experiences the most vandalism due to youth disregarding warnings.
All repair work is carried out by professionals at the Service Center, who continue their duties despite challenges.
