Ukrainian Swimmer's Triumph at World Junior Championships
Details about the success of Ukrainian swimmer Nikita Sheremet at the 10th World Junior Swimming Championships in Romania.
In 2025, six children lost their lives in Ukraine due to dangerous activities on the railway, with another eight sustaining injuries.
This information was shared by Vitaliy Romanov, Deputy Head of the Juvenile Police of Ukraine, during a broadcast on "Public TV".
Freight surfing is a term used to describe risky games adolescents play on railway tracks, where they climb onto trains to capture videos or photos. Another variant of this "activity" involves hanging onto the sides of trains while they are in motion.
"The consequences of freight surfing are dire, often leading to fatalities. Therefore, we constantly emphasize the need to work on preventing such incidents," noted Vitaliy Romanov.
He recounted two accidents that occurred in Volyn on the same day – April 20. In one case, a 16-year-old boy suffered injuries after climbing onto a train.
A few hours later, a 13-year-old boy attempted to shoot a video on top of a train and climbed there via a ladder. Unfortunately, he was electrocuted.
"In this instance, the child sustained 80% burns to his body; his condition is extremely critical, and doctors are fighting for his life," stated Vitaliy Romanov.
He also added that freight surfing is a phenomenon not only in Ukraine but also in other countries. Often, the victims of such activities are children from well-off families who had not previously come to the attention of law enforcement.
It is worth noting that on March 12, a 12-year-old boy in Kyiv climbed onto the train car and suffered severe burns from electrocution. Doctors battled for five days to save his life, but the teenager sadly passed away.
