Odessa Team Prepares for International Children's Games
The Mayor of Odessa met with young athletes ahead of the international competition in Tallinn.
The city of Odessa has paid tribute to a remarkable figure in football by renaming Alexander Matrosov Lane in honor of Valeriy Lobanovskyi. This coach, renowned for his contributions to Kyiv's «Dynamo», also maintained strong ties with Odessa.
Valeriy Lobanovskyi and His Odessa Connection
Lobanovskyi played for «Chornomorets» in 1965-1966, featuring in 59 matches and scoring 15 goals. He also earned his higher education at the Polytechnic Institute in Odessa.
Awards and Global Recognition
Lobanovskyi has been recognized as one of the best coaches in football history, making it to the top-15 list by GiveMeSport. His career includes coaching «Dynamo», «Dnipro», as well as national teams.
Under his guidance, «Dynamo» won the Soviet championship eight times and six Soviet Cups. On the European stage, the team clinched the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup twice and the European Super Cup, defeating «Bayern Munich». After the Soviet Union's collapse, «Dynamo» continued to dominate, securing five consecutive championship titles and three Ukrainian Cups.
