Roman Legion Experience in Odessa: A Journey into Antiquity

Roman legionnaires have been spotted on Deribasivska Street in Odessa, where they will stay for two days. Helmets, armor, weapons, and traditional costumes create a unique atmosphere that you can experience starting tomorrow. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the lives of ancient Roman soldiers.

Journalists from Novyny.LIVE visited the site and learned about the preparations for the event.

Open-Air Roman Camp

A true Roman camp is being set up right in the heart of Odessa. Visitors will witness coin minting and weapon demonstrations. Currently, tents are being erected and costumes fitted, but everything will be ready for visitors starting tomorrow.

"We initially planned to open the camp earlier, but the weather had its say. Tomorrow, we will be fully operational. Romans had connections to the Odessa region, and we are recreating their history here," said organizer Anatoliy Provchenko.

Authentic Costumes

The reconstruction is meticulously planned down to the smallest details. Participants wear costumes and armor that have historical verification. According to one of the reenactors, Alexander, some items have authenticity certificates.

"I am wearing a lorica segmentata, the armor of a Roman warrior. This is a Gladius sword — short and effective for thrusting. The shield is a scutum. This is how the Roman army looked during the time of Christ," said Alexander.

On Saturday and most of Sunday, everyone is welcome to feel part of the camp. Visitors will learn about armor and weapons and even have the opportunity to feel like a legionnaire.

Grand Reconstruction

The event will culminate in a large-scale Easter reconstruction that has been held for over 12 years. This year, it takes on special significance, inviting deeper reflection on events from two millennia ago. In the heart of modern Odessa, the world of antiquity will come alive, where every movement, costume, or line is not just a decoration but an attempt to touch the flow of history.

"Deribasivska will be filled with scenes. There will be six large stages where various actions will take place. Everything will begin with the grand entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a living donkey," shared organizer Anatoliy.

Historical reconstruction is not just a spectacular event, but a true journey back in time, allowing residents and guests of Odessa to not only observe but also personally touch the past and feel the rhythm of life of the Roman legion, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity and rethinking historical moments.
