Young Man Convicted for Cruelty Towards a Dog

A 20-year-old resident of the Podilskyi district was sentenced for cruel treatment of a neighbor's dog, which resulted in the animal's death.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odessa region. A reconciliation agreement was made between the offender and the victim. The young man will face a punishment of restricted freedom with a probation period.

In February of this year, a woman from one of the villages of the Ananiv territorial community contacted the police, stating that an unknown individual killed her yard dog on her property and discarded the body into an abandoned well.

From the crime scene, police seized two bloodied and broken kitchen knives, which, along with the dog's body, were sent for forensic examination. According to the expert's conclusion, the dog's death was due to blood loss caused by cut and chopped wounds to the head and neck.

Police established that a 20-year-old local resident was involved in the crime. The young man claimed that the woman's dog was allegedly causing harm to his parents' household. Instead of reporting it to the police, he decided to enter the unprotected territory of the woman's property and inflicted bodily harm to the tied dog with two knives he brought with him, then discarded the animal into the well.

Investigators charged the suspect under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses cruel treatment of vertebrate animals leading to their death.

During the pre-trial investigation, the accused admitted his guilt and entered into a reconciliation agreement with the dog's owner, which, along with the indictment, was submitted to the court.

The court found the defendant guilty, approved the reconciliation agreement, and imposed a punishment of one year of restricted freedom with a one-year probation period. During the probation, the convicted person must periodically appear for registration at the probation authority, inform them of any changes in residence, work, or study, and obtain permission for any travel outside Ukraine.
