Arrest of Fraudster in Odesa Promising Exemption from Mobilization

In Odesa, law enforcement officials apprehended a criminal who promised to assist someone in avoiding mobilization into the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a fee, and also to employ him as an «off-the-books agent» in the Security Service of Ukraine. The fraudster demanded $5,500 for his services. The offender faces up to eight years in prison.
Criminals will go to great lengths to profit from those wishing to evade military service. One such scheme was uncovered by operatives of the Odesa Department of Internal Security and investigators of the Main Directorate of National Police in Odesa region.
This scam was attempted by a 44-year-old native of Dnipropetrovsk region, currently residing in Odesa. He claimed he could secure employment for a man as an «off-the-books agent» in the SBU and arrange a deferment from military service based on fake documents.
According to the fraudster, he intended to involve his acquaintances who were supposedly able to assist in executing the plan. He demanded the money urgently, threatening to report the «client» to the TCC if he refused the «deal».
Police arrested the criminal in the process after he received part of the payment. Items of evidence were seized.
Investigators from the Odesa police have informed the fraudster of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 369-2 (Abuse of Influence) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He faces up to eight years in prison for his actions.
The procedural oversight is conducted by the Kyiv District Prosecutor's Office of the city of Odesa.
