The Importance of Early Cancer Diagnosis in Ukraine

Cancer is treatable in its early stages, and timely diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment. The medical guarantee program in Ukraine allows individuals to undergo necessary cancer screenings at no cost, as reported by the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU).

Early diagnosis of the most common cancers is a priority, offering free services through six key packages:

  • Mammography – an X-ray examination of the breasts to detect abnormalities;
  • Hysteroscopy – examination of the uterine cavity to identify early pathologies;
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy – examination of the esophagus and stomach to detect anomalies;
  • Colonoscopy – examination of the colon to identify inflammatory processes;
  • Cystoscopy – examination of the bladder to detect neoplasms;
  • Bronchoscopy – examination of the airways to identify mucosal diseases.

Residents of Kyiv, especially internally displaced persons, can access early diagnosis services at medical institutions that have contracts with the NHSU. An electronic referral from a family doctor is required.

Diagnostic examinations are available to patients of certain ages: mammography and colonoscopy are for individuals aged 40 and over, while other procedures are for those aged 50 and above.

Internally displaced persons can also access additional services such as anesthesia, consultations, biological material collection, and result documentation.
