Inclusive Sports Initiatives for Individuals with Disabilities in Odesa

An essential focus for the Odesa city authorities is the organization of sports and physical activities for individuals with disabilities, as well as rehabilitation through adaptive sports to improve the quality of life for veterans.

As part of the City Target Program “Development of Physical Culture and Sports in Odesa for 2024 – 2027”, various sporting events are organized for individuals with disabilities and war veterans.

One notable event is the “Black Sea Cup” in wheelchair basketball, held in collaboration with the Odesa City Basketball Federation. Competing teams included “Odesa-Basket” and two teams from Kyiv: “Kyiv Lions” and “Titans”.

Moreover, individuals with disabilities can purchase memberships to sports facilities (sports clubs, sections, gyms, swimming pools). This year, the Odesa City Council’s Department of Physical Culture and Sports purchased 156 memberships for the swimming pool at the sports complex “Sports Academy” and 100 memberships for the “ZAL” fitness club network.

In 2024, these memberships will be provided to individuals with disabilities, including war veterans, participants of qualifying competitions, and competitors of the Invictus Games. In total, 78 individuals with disabilities received swimming pool memberships, including 30 veterans, while 30 individuals with disabilities, including 16 veterans, received fitness club memberships.

Next year, the budget for providing access to sports facilities for individuals with disabilities is planned to be increased.
