Energy Recovery in Odesa: New Horizons

On June 21, a significant meeting took place in Odesa between Mayor Gennady Trukhanov and Haoliang Xu, the UN Deputy Secretary-General.

During the visit, the delegation and representatives of Ukrainian ministries evaluated the implementation of the «Green Energy Recovery» program, which is being carried out in partnership with UNDP, supported by the governments of Sweden, Norway, and Japan.

The main goal of this initiative is to enhance the energy resilience of Odesa, which suffers from regular assaults by the aggressor, and to provide critical infrastructure with autonomous sources of heat and electricity.

«In a short time, we achieved what seems impossible in wartime. Four out of nine planned cogeneration stations have already been installed. This is not just equipment; it represents our confidence in resilience, victory, and warmth in the homes of Odesa residents,» said Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.

This project illustrates the effective collaboration between local authorities and the international community to meet vital community needs and ensure sustainable development in Odesa.

«This cooperation exemplifies how international support helps Ukraine endure. It is a great honor for us to be here and contribute to the city's energy independence,» emphasized Haoliang Xu.

«The project is an important part of the state program for decentralizing energy supply,» added Konstantin Kovalchuk, Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine.

Currently, four cogeneration units with a capacity of 3.3 MW each are operational in Odesa. Two more are expected soon, and the complete project of nine installations with a total capacity of 29.7 MW is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. This will provide reliable autonomous heat and electricity supply for over 900,000 Odesa residents even in the event of total power outages.
