Maintenance of the Ponds in Victory Dendropark

Nearly two kilometers (1930 meters) of shoreline around the water bodies in Victory Dendropark in Odessa is cleaned daily by workers from the Municipal Enterprise "Service Center".

To maintain the cleanliness of the area, the employees carry out a wide range of activities related to the organization of the ponds and their surroundings.

Regular cleaning of the water surface from fallen leaves, branches, and debris is conducted; sweeping of adjacent pedestrian paths and bridges; mowing of grass in the sanitary zone; repainting and maintenance of complex elements, including paths, fences, bridges, islands, and the pumping station; cleaning of the pumping station area and the maintenance section, and clearing of drains, among other tasks.

The history of the ponds in Victory Dendropark dates back to 1960. In the 1970s, a concrete pond was created in the park, which later evolved into a system of four artificial lakes. The depth of the ponds ranges from 0.8 to 1.7 meters.

Currently, the ponds represent a hydraulic structure that includes a system of waterfalls, which, besides their aesthetic function, help mix the water surface to prevent stagnation. Periodically, specialists introduce chlorella into the ponds, a natural means of improving water quality that reduces "blooming" and oxygenates the water.

The fountain located in the ponds is automatically activated daily from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Additionally, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the fountain is beautifully illuminated. The project "Light Show 'Fairy Pond'" was implemented in 2017 as part of the Public Budget of Odessa.

Since 2020, a grotto has also embellished the ponds, becoming a popular photo zone for locals and visitors alike. The idea for the grotto's creation belongs to Mayor Gennady Trukhanov, who proposed transforming the technological hub that supplies water to the ponds into a recreational area.

In the spring and summer, a pair of swans can be observed at the ponds, while in winter, they migrate to the Odessa Zoo.

The ponds also host wild ducks, which fly away for the winter, and turtles that hibernate. The municipal enterprise employees have never engaged in breeding fish or turtles in the lake; instead, they appeared here spontaneously. Unfortunately, some turtle species that are not adapted to live in ponds do not survive.

Additionally, various fish inhabit the ponds. In winter, when the pond surfaces freeze, employees of the Municipal Enterprise "Service Center" make holes in the ice to ensure oxygen reaches the water.

Thus, the hydraulic structure of the ponds is a central component of Victory Dendropark, providing picturesque views, a rich network of paths, diverse vegetation, and a vibrant animal world, smartly combining areas for active and tranquil recreation for visitors of all ages.
