Enhancing barrier-free for Patients in Ophthalmology

Ophthalmologists have approached the Barrier-Free Council at the Odesa City Mayor's office with a proposal to support the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy in implementing barrier-free solutions on its premises. This involves creating pedestrian areas with tactile surfaces, developing accessible navigation, and using Braille signage — all of which are critically important for visually impaired patients.

«I will bring this issue to the attention of the deputies, as the Filatov Institute is not just a medical facility. It is a research center with over a century of history, operating under the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Its contributions to ophthalmology are recognized not just in Ukraine but also abroad. We will definitely find ways to assist», - stated Odesa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.

The clinic of the Institute serves about 500 patients daily, including civilians, children, persons with disabilities, and military personnel who receive high-quality medical assistance.

Previously, repairs to the sidewalks and the installation of a traffic light had already been completed on the section of French Boulevard adjacent to the facility.

«The next logical step should be the creation of a fully barrier-free environment that meets the status of the institution and the needs of its patients», - added the mayor's advisor on barrier-free issues, Oleksiy Morozov.
