Arrest of Man for Illegal Weapon Modification in Odessa

A man has been charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and a preventive measure has been chosen. He faces a lengthy prison term.

The operation to uncover and stop the criminal activities of the Odessa resident was carried out by the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police in the Odessa region, in cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to law enforcement, a 42-year-old man set up a workshop in his garage for modifying firearms. He ordered models of firearms online and, using specialized tools, made modifications to these models, turning them into firearms for sale in the Odessa region.

The police documented a sale of modified firearms for 39 thousand hryvnias. The suspect was apprehended while sending another "shipment" to a buyer with the support of the police special unit KORD.

Investigators conducted a total of 10 searches in the suspect's car, at his residence, workplace, garages, and other accessible premises. A number of items resembling weapon models, ammunition, and magazines for various types of guns were seized, along with equipment used by the perpetrator for the manufacture and modification of firearms. All evidence has been sent for expert examination.

Additionally, money in foreign and national currencies, which the suspect allegedly received from weapon sales, was confiscated. The police will clarify their origin during the investigation.

Currently, investigators have informed the suspect about the charges of illegal modification of firearms and illegal possession and sale of firearms without the required legal permission. The court has chosen a preventive measure of detention with the right to post bail of 908,400 hryvnias.

The maximum penalty the suspect faces is seven years of imprisonment.

Investigative actions are ongoing. The procedural oversight in the case is being carried out by the Kyiv District Prosecutor's Office in Odessa.
