Emergency Water Shutdown in Odessa
Important notice regarding the emergency water shutdown in the Peresyp district of Odessa on August 13, 2025.
Fortunately, nothing bad happened during their time underground. The children have been reunited with their families. Yesterday around 5 PM, a resident of Odesa reported her 13-year-old son missing to the hotline 102. Police immediately began searching for him. After interviewing relatives and friends, juvenile officers learned that he had planned to explore the catacombs with a peer.
Involving canine units, emergency services, and spelunkers, the search yielded results in less than an hour. Authorities found the children 300 meters from the exit of the catacombs. Along with the boys initially reported missing, there were two other young acquaintances.
The boys explained that they wanted to explore the Odesa catacombs but failed to inform their parents. Communication was lost as soon as they descended into the underground world.
Juvenile prevention officers held a preventive discussion with the teenagers and their parents to prevent similar situations in the future. None of them had previously come to the attention of law enforcement.
Regarding the adults, authorities issued protocols under part 1 of Article 184 of the Code of Ukraine on administrative offenses. This concerns parental neglect of their responsibilities to ensure necessary living, educational, and upbringing conditions for minors. The penalty may include a warning or a fine of up to 1700 hryvnias. Administrative materials will be submitted to the court.
“We were very worried about the kids because it's easy to get lost in the catacombs. Given that the temperature there is much lower than on the surface, it can be extremely dangerous. Fortunately, the teenagers were found quickly, they were unharmed and returned home safely,” commented Alina Khimich, senior inspector of the juvenile prevention sector of the Odesa district police department No. 1.
Police urge both children and adults not to descend into the catacombs without experienced spelunkers. They are extensive, easily disorienting, lack communication, and are very cold. This creates a deadly danger.
