Aquarium Closure for Maintenance
The aquarium at Odessa Zoo will be closed for four days for maintenance work.
Amateur performers from the village of Zagnitkiv, along with masters from the Black Sea region, participated in the festival «Living Culture – Living World» held on September 6 and 7 in Kyiv.
This festival marked the beginning of the celebrations for the International Days of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2025, which were officially declared at the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference in November 2023.
The highlight of the Odesa delegation was the group of amateurs from Zagnitkiv. The folk ensemble «Vytoki» together with grandmothers showcased ancient children's games inherited from their ancestors. Notably, the oldest participant is 85 years old, while the youngest is only nine.
Additionally, the village's intangible cultural heritage includes ancient dances and songs from old Zagnitkiv.
The klezmer music performed by the boys from the brass band captivated the participants and guests of the festival. Everyone danced to their tunes.
The musicians received gifts of hats made from reeds, presented by one of the festival attendees who purchased them from artisans in Vinnytsia. Each hat costs around one thousand hryvnias.
Throughout the two-day festival, over thirty elements of intangible cultural heritage from various regions of Ukraine were showcased, including Zagnitkiv's cabbage rolls, which were prepared this time with beet leaves and coltsfoot. Guests also enjoyed traditional Zagnitkiv cabbage soup, vertyuty, and bread.
A UNESCO representative called the performers from Zagnitkiv the most colorful group presented at the festival.
The festival was organized by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, and the Democracy through Culture Development Center.
