Pruning of Weeping Sophoras in Odesa

As spring approaches, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise «Miskzelentrest» are undertaking formative pruning of weeping trees, particularly Japanese sophoras, mulberries, and ashes. This annual procedure is essential for these types of trees.

The sophoras adorning the Theater Square were planted on September 25, 1895. This year, they will celebrate their 130th anniversary. These Japanese sophoras are considered significant botanical monuments of local importance.

Since early February, landscapers have begun rejuvenation pruning of sophoras throughout the city. This work is done manually with pruning shears. The weeping crown shape of the Japanese sophora is artificially created, necessitating regular pruning.
This year, at sites serviced by the «Miskzelentrest» (City Garden, Theater Square, Taras Shevchenko Park, «Luzanivka» Hydropart, and others), it is planned to prune 463 weeping trees.

The Japanese sophora is a deciduous tree that can reach heights of 20-30 meters in its native regions (Japan, China, Korea) and no more than 10-12 meters in temperate zones. This species is known for its longevity, living for 500 years or more. In Odesa, sophoras have been used for landscaping since the 1820s.
