Completion of Investigation in Severe Bodily Harm Case

Investigators have completed the preliminary investigation and submitted the case against an individual charged with inflicting severe bodily harm to the court. He faces up to eight years in prison.

This was reported by the police.

The incident occurred in September of last year in the Primorsky district of Odessa. During the preliminary investigation, police determined that a 67-year-old man from Mykolaiv region, having missed his train, sought to stay overnight in a multi-story building where apartments are rented out, based on advice from passersby.

By mistakenly confusing the apartment number, the elderly man began knocking on the door of a 31-year-old Odessa resident and attempted to open it. When the homeowner came out, a dispute arose regarding why the passerby had entered a residential area where he did not live.

The verbal conflict escalated into a physical altercation, during which the younger local resident beat the elderly visitor. The victim lost consciousness, and the assailant dragged him to a fence, where he struck him several more times before leaving.

The injured man was discovered by a bus station guard who notified the police. Medical personnel hospitalized the victim with a traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture, a brain contusion, and multiple abrasions on his head. The forensic examination concluded that these injuries were severe and posed a danger to life.

The assailant, who inflicted severe bodily harm on the hospitalized victim, was tracked down and arrested by operatives of the Police Department No. 2 of the Odessa District Police Department No. 1 the following morning.

"The offender was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and, upon our request, placed in custody, where he remains. After gathering sufficient evidence of the illegal actions of the suspect, we charged him under part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns intentional infliction of severe bodily harm that is dangerous to life at the time of infliction. The indictment has been submitted to the court. According to current legislation, the offender faces up to eight years of imprisonment," reported Valeria Buliga, an investigator from the territorial unit of the police. The investigation was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Primorsky District Prosecutor's Office in Odessa.
