Updated Educational Program for High School in Ukraine

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has introduced a new educational program for high school students. This document is a significant step in the education reform.

The program enables students in grades 10 to 12 to choose their learning path.

Choosing a study profile. Students can select a set of subjects and courses that are part of the designated profile. For instance, by choosing a math profile, students will study mathematics in greater depth along with other mandatory subjects.

Choosing additional courses. Students can select subjects to deepen their knowledge within their profile, such as a course on combinatorial analysis for the mathematics track.

Choosing extracurricular subjects. Students have the right to select courses outside their profile for holistic development. For example, a student in the math profile may choose a course in drama and theater.

The curriculum also includes subjects that are mandatory for all students. All compulsory subjects for the state final certification will be studied over three years.

What’s new in the Typical Educational Program:

  • The ability to form dynamic groups for elective subject learning.
  • Reduction in the number of mandatory subjects. Previously, in grade 11, students had to manage at least 14 subjects, but this can now be reduced to 5–8 in grade 12, depending on the profile. This is especially important for schools implementing integrated learning.
  • Schools can independently create programs for non-profile subjects without necessarily using approved models.

Hours allocated for different educational fields

The Typical Educational Program includes educational plans for three clusters:

  • Language and Literature
  • Social and Humanitarian
  • STEM

Within these clusters, schools will be able to form various profiles.

Grade 10 — adaptation cycle (where students can change their profile)

  • The number of hours for mandatory subjects in the first semester of grade 10 is the same for all students, allowing them to catch up on any educational losses and gradually adapt to new learning formats.
  • In the first semester, students will have hours for elective subjects.
  • In the second semester, the number of hours for profile subjects will increase.

Grades 11–12 — profile cycle

  • The curriculum includes more hours for studying the chosen profile and elective subjects.
  • Each year, the number of hours for profile subjects will increase, while hours for mandatory subjects will decrease.
